The KP free cancer medicines program is set to resume across the province after a fresh directive aimed at restoring and expanding support for underprivileged patients battling cancer. The decision brings major relief for thousands of families who struggle with the rising cost of treatment in public and private hospitals.
Chief Minister Sohail Khan Afridi has ordered the immediate restart of the initiative and its expansion to all districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Officials say the move is part of a wider health-sector push under the upcoming Annual Development Program (ADP) 2026–2027.
The program had faced delays in recent months due to funding and administrative adjustments. However, authorities now say it will be fully restored with improved coverage and better coordination with hospitals and healthcare units.
Expanded Coverage for Cancer Patients
Under the revived plan, cancer patients from all districts will be eligible for free essential medicines. The program will prioritize low-income families who cannot afford long-term treatment.
Health officials have been instructed to ensure an uninterrupted supply of oncology medicines in public hospitals. The government also plans to strengthen monitoring systems so that patients receive timely support without bureaucratic delays.
The expansion is expected to include major hospitals and specialized treatment centers across the province. This includes oncology units in Peshawar and planned cancer care facilities in other cities.
Major Health Reforms Under ADP 2026–2027
The decision to restore KP’s free cancer medicines came during a high-level meeting on development priorities for the upcoming fiscal year.
The chief minister reviewed multiple health sector proposals, including the upgrading of Basic Health Units (BHUs), Rural Health Clinics (RHCs), and district hospitals. Officials also discussed establishing new specialized centers to improve cancer and chronic disease treatment.
One of the key proposals includes setting up an advanced Oncology Center in Mardan. A Burn and Kidney Center and a Clinical Tower in Swabi were also recommended to improve regional healthcare access.
In addition, a “Health City” concept in Peshawar is under consideration, which aims to bring multiple specialized hospitals under one integrated system.
Focus on Funding and Infrastructure
During the meeting, the chief minister directed officials to speed up completion of ongoing health projects, including the Khyber Institute of Child Health. He also ordered the immediate release of pending funds to avoid delays.
He emphasized coordination with the federal government to secure financial support for major health initiatives. According to officials, improved funding flow is critical for sustaining long-term treatment programs like free cancer care.
Authorities have also been instructed to improve hospital infrastructure and ensure that essential diagnostic and treatment facilities are available at the district level.
Wider Social Welfare Vision
The government’s renewed focus on healthcare is part of a broader development vision that includes youth welfare, agriculture support, and emergency services.
Officials have been tasked with designing schemes that support farmers, students, and low-income households. The administration also plans to expand Rescue 1122 services and improve emergency response coverage in remote areas.
Special focus is on inclusive healthcare, including separate sports and rehabilitation facilities for children with special needs in major cities.

The restoration of KP’s free cancer medicines is expected to provide significant financial relief for families across the province. Cancer treatment often requires long-term medication, which many households cannot afford without government support.
