The Canal Road ban has come into effect in Lahore after the traffic authorities imposed a strict restriction on Qingqi and loader rickshaws. The move targets one of the city’s busiest corridors, Canal Road, where officials say slow-moving and overloaded vehicles have been a major cause of congestion and accidents.
According to traffic officials, the decision was taken to improve traffic flow and reduce road safety risks. Loader rickshaws, often used for transporting goods, were found to be operating in unsafe conditions. Authorities said improper loading and speeding issues had increased the likelihood of serious crashes.
Qingqi rickshaws have also been restricted due to their impact on smooth traffic movement. Officials noted that these three-wheeled vehicles frequently slow down traffic on key stretches of Canal Road, especially during peak hours.
Traffic measures and enforcement
Traffic police have deployed special enforcement teams at key entry and exit points, including major intersections along Canal Road. These teams are tasked with ensuring full compliance with the new restriction.
Authorities have also warned that strict action will be taken against drivers who violate the ban. In addition, supervisory officers have been instructed to monitor field staff and ensure no negligence in enforcement.
Officials further stated that overloaded passenger rickshaws will also face action under existing traffic laws. The aim is to reduce pressure on urban roads and improve safety for commuters.
Residents and daily commuters have expressed mixed reactions. Some welcome the move, saying it will reduce congestion. Others believe alternative transport arrangements are needed for affected drivers.
The Canal Road ban is part of broader efforts to modernize traffic management in Lahore and improve road discipline across major city routes.
