The Punjab government has completed construction of 52 underground water storage tanks across multiple cities, aiming to improve drainage and manage water flow during heavy rainfall. The development is part of a wider infrastructure upgrade focused on urban water management, according to officials.
The project highlights growing efforts to address urban flooding risks and improve drainage systems in both large and small cities of the province.
Drainage Upgrade and Monsoon Preparedness
Officials said the newly built Punjab underground water tanks are designed to store excess rainwater and reduce pressure on existing drainage networks. The tanks are spread across 51 cities and are connected to newly constructed and restored drainage lines.
According to the Local Government Department, 43 additional tanks are in the final stages of completion. Once fully operational, the system will help manage millions of gallons of rainwater during peak monsoon periods.
Authorities confirmed that 41 kilometers of new drainage channels are under construction, while 13 kilometers of existing drains have already been restored. These upgrades aim to reduce urban flooding risks, especially in low-lying areas that are often affected during heavy rains.
Officials also directed municipal teams to ensure that all underground tanks are properly linked with drainage systems. This connection will allow surplus water to flow into drains once the storage capacity is full.
The government has also emphasized timely cleaning and de-silting of drains before the monsoon season begins. Local officers have been instructed to submit regular maintenance reports to ensure readiness across all districts.
Focus on Long-Term Urban Water Management
The project reflects a long-term strategy to modernize urban infrastructure and improve water management efficiency. Officials said the underground tanks can collectively store up to 55 million gallons of water, helping reduce pressure on city drainage systems during extreme weather conditions.
The initiative is also expected to reduce road flooding, protect infrastructure, and improve public safety in urban areas. Authorities believe that better drainage control will minimize disruptions caused by seasonal rains.
As the monsoon approaches, Punjab departments are speeding up preparations to keep drainage and storage systems fully operational.
