The Matric fee refund issue has gained attention in Sindh after authorities directed private schools to return illegally charged fees from Class 10 students. The Sindh education department has taken strict action against schools collecting tuition during the examination period.
Officials from the Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions Sindh, said they received multiple complaints from parents across the province, including Karachi. The complaints stated that several private schools continued charging monthly fees from matric students even during their board examination months.
According to the official directive issued this week, schools must immediately refund fees collected from students for the months of April to July 2026. Authorities declared this practice unlawful and against existing education policies.
The decision has created widespread discussion among parents, educators, and school administrations, as it directly impacts thousands of students appearing in matric examinations across Sindh.
Schools’ justification rejected by authorities
Some private schools argued that they charged additional fees because students were still involved in practical examinations during the academic year. However, the education directorate rejected this explanation.
Officials clarified that practical examination charges are already included in the standard monthly tuition structure. Therefore, no extra or extended fees can be collected during exam months.
The department further dismissed the claim that schools could legally collect fees until July 2026 simply because the academic session started in August 2025. Authorities said this interpretation violates existing regulatory decisions and education policies approved by the provincial steering committee.
Strict action warning for non-compliance
The education department has warned schools to comply with the refund order without delay. Officials stated that failure to follow instructions will result in strict legal action.
Possible penalties include heavy fines, suspension of registration, or even cancellation of a school’s license. Authorities may also refer non-compliant institutions to examination boards for further disciplinary proceedings.
Inspection teams have been instructed to visit schools and verify compliance. These teams will submit reports identifying institutions that fail to refund the collected fees.
Officials emphasized that protecting students and parents from unfair financial burden remains a top priority. They also stated that no institution will be allowed to operate outside approved fee structures.
Impact on parents and students
The Matric fee refund order has brought relief to many parents who previously raised concerns about rising private school costs. For many families, matric examination years already come with additional expenses, including coaching, registration, and exam preparation fees.
Parents’ groups have welcomed the decision, saying it could help reduce financial pressure during critical academic periods. However, some school representatives are expected to seek clarification or review of the directive.
Education experts believe the move may also encourage better fee transparency in the private education sector. They suggest that clearer rules could prevent similar disputes in future academic sessions.
Authorities have reiterated that all private institutions must strictly follow approved fee schedules and cannot impose additional charges outside regulatory limits.
As enforcement begins across Sindh, both parents and schools are closely watching how effectively the Matric fee refund process will be implemented in the coming weeks.
