Karachi gas supply has been restored in several major areas after Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) completed pipeline work near the NIPA flyover, bringing relief to thousands of residents and businesses across the city.
The utility company announced that gas services resumed after teams successfully finished lowering heavy-pressure pipelines linked to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route project. The maintenance work caused temporary gas suspension in multiple parts of Karachi during the scheduled shutdown period over the weekend.
According to SSGC, the operation started on Saturday night and continued until early Sunday morning. The company carried out the work in coordination with the ongoing infrastructure development near NIPA.
Residents in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, PECHS, Saddar, Garden, and nearby localities reported that gas pressure gradually returned after the maintenance activity ended. Areas including Jamshaid Road, Jahangir Road, PIB Colony, Lines Area, Lyari, and parts of Kharadar also saw services restored.
Several important institutions were affected during the temporary shutdown, including Liaquat National Hospital, Aga Khan University Hospital, and Karachi Central Prison. SSGC said the restoration process was completed successfully without extended delays.
The pipeline-lowering project involved 16-inch and 20-inch heavy-pressure gas pipelines. Officials stated that the work was necessary to support the Trans Karachi BRT infrastructure while ensuring the safety of existing gas lines.
The temporary suspension had raised concerns among residents, especially in densely populated neighborhoods. However, many consumers welcomed the quick restoration and smooth completion of the project.
SSGC advised customers to report low pressure or service-related complaints through official helplines if any issues continue in specific areas.
Pakistan’s largest city often faces utility disruptions during large-scale infrastructure upgrades. Energy and transport authorities continue to coordinate projects to minimize inconvenience for residents while improving urban facilities.
