Karachi Port Sets New Record in Marine Fuel Delivery

Karachi has achieved a major milestone in maritime trade, as a record-breaking Karachi fuel delivery operation was completed at the Karachi Port. The development highlights Pakistan’s growing capacity in marine bunkering and signals stronger momentum in the country’s shipping and energy sectors.

The operation involved the bunker vessel Marine ISTA, operated by Vitol, which supplied approximately 4,900 metric tons of marine fuel to the container ship MSC Apollo, owned by MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company. The vessel made a dedicated fuel stop within the Karachi Port Trust zone, marking one of the largest bunker-only calls in the port’s history.

This record reflects rapid progress in Pakistan’s marine fuel infrastructure. Over the past year, the country has made steady improvements in handling large-scale fuel deliveries. Industry experts say such operations were previously limited, but new investments and operational upgrades have expanded capacity significantly.

Earlier, Marine ISTA had already set a national benchmark by delivering a higher-capacity shipment of very low sulphur fuel oil. The latest operation further strengthens confidence in Pakistan’s ability to handle high-volume marine fuel logistics efficiently.

Pakistan’s broader maritime strategy closely drives the expansion of bunkering services. With support from global energy firms like Vitol, the country aims to supply hundreds of thousands of metric tons of marine fuel annually. This supply network will extend beyond Karachi to include Port Qasim and offshore anchorage areas.

Officials believe this growth could benefit Pakistan’s refinery sector by creating a stable domestic market for fuel oil. At the same time, it could reduce reliance on exports and improve overall efficiency in fuel distribution.

Shipping analysts also point to operational advantages. Larger and faster fuel deliveries help reduce vessel waiting times, allowing ships like MSC Apollo to complete port calls more quickly. This efficiency can improve Pakistan’s competitiveness as a regional shipping and transshipment hub.

The milestone comes at a time when global shipping routes are becoming more competitive. Ports across Asia and the Middle East are investing heavily in bunkering services to attract international carriers. By scaling up its operations, Karachi is positioning itself as a viable alternative in the region.
