WhatsApp has started allowing users to reserve WhatsApp usernames before the feature becomes widely available later this year. The update is designed to give people a new way to connect without revealing their phone numbers, offering better privacy for personal conversations and business interactions.
The feature is being introduced in phases. While users can already claim their preferred usernames, they will become fully functional once WhatsApp completes the global rollout. Reserving a username now also prevents someone else from claiming the same handle.
How to reserve WhatsApp usernames
Users can reserve a username by opening Settings, selecting Account, and tapping Username under the “Your Account” section. The app then provides a “Create username” option where users can enter their preferred handle.
If the requested username is already taken, WhatsApp suggests alternative options. Some usernames have already been reserved because they belong to public figures or major organizations.
People who already use the same username on Facebook or Instagram can sign in through those platforms to reserve a matching WhatsApp username, where available.

Why WhatsApp usernames matter
The biggest benefit of WhatsApp usernames is improved privacy. Instead of sharing a personal phone number, users will be able to connect through a unique username.
This change is especially useful for users who prefer to keep their mobile numbers private. Businesses can also share a username with customers instead of displaying a phone number, making customer communication more convenient while adding an extra layer of privacy.
Users can edit or remove usernames anytime
After creating a username, users are free to change it whenever they want through the same Account settings page. Those who no longer wish to use a username can also delete it completely.
WhatsApp is also introducing a new Username Key feature. Users can choose whether anyone can contact them or limit access to people who know their four-digit security key.
If someone does not have the required key, they must enter it before sending the first message. Users can keep the key private or generate a new one whenever needed.

Rollout will continue in phases
WhatsApp says the username feature is not yet available to everyone. The company is gradually expanding access over the coming weeks while allowing users to reserve their preferred usernames in advance.
The phased rollout of WhatsApp usernames helps ensure duplicate usernames are avoided before the feature becomes fully available worldwide.
