Karachi authorities have launched a coordinated Karachi Airport Bird Strike Prevention campaign to reduce the risk of bird strikes near Jinnah International Airport. The initiative focuses on stopping garbage dumping around the airport, improving cleanliness, and removing waste that attracts birds, helping improve flight safety for passengers and aircraft.
The action plan was discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi. Officials agreed on immediate measures to prevent waste disposal in areas surrounding the airport, where accumulated garbage has increased the presence of birds.
Karachi Airport Bird Strike Prevention Measures Begin
To strengthen the campaign, a dedicated committee has been established with representatives from the district administration, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), Cantonment Boards, and the Airport Authority.
The committee has been assigned to monitor locations near the airport and implement practical steps to stop garbage dumping in nearby stormwater drains (nullahs). Authorities will also oversee continuous cleaning efforts to reduce conditions that attract birds close to flight paths.
Commissioner Hassan Naqvi instructed all Deputy Commissioners, particularly the DC East office, to strictly enforce the ban on dumping waste near the airport and ensure regular sanitation work continues without interruption.
Cleanup Ordered at Key Areas Near Jinnah Airport
Airport officials briefed the meeting on conditions around Thado Nallah, Chakor Nallah, and the area near Habib University.
Following the review, the Commissioner directed authorities to immediately remove accumulated garbage from Chakor Nallah and surrounding locations. Officials were instructed to ensure the cleanup is completed effectively to reduce bird activity near the airport.
The meeting also discussed complaints about residents of nearby apartment buildings disposing of household waste directly into Chakor Nallah. DC East has been directed to address these complaints on a priority basis.
Apartment Associations to Support Waste Control
As part of the campaign, the newly formed committee will work with apartment associations located within a two-kilometer radius of Jinnah International Airport.
These associations will be required to help prevent residents from dumping garbage into public spaces and nearby drains. The measure aims to improve long-term waste management and reduce bird hazards around one of Pakistan’s busiest airports.
