The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 Punjab Muharram across the province for the first 10 days of Muharram-ul-Haram, introducing strict security measures to maintain peace and public order during the religious period.
According to an official notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, the restrictions will remain in place from the 1st to the 10th of Muharram. Authorities said the decision has been taken in view of security concerns and the need to ensure religious harmony across the province.
Strict Restrictions Announced Across Punjab
Under the new orders, all new events, changes to existing mourning processions, or gatherings will not be allowed during the restricted period without prior approval from the authorities.
The government has also banned the public display of weapons and flammable materials. Officials said such items will not be permitted in public spaces unless special permission is granted by law enforcement agencies.
Provocative slogans, gestures, and statements are strictly prohibited to maintain harmony. Authorities warned that any attempt to spread sectarian or ethnic hatred will be dealt with under the law.
Officials will monitor social media to prevent religious or communal tension during Muharram.
Pillion Riding Ban and Security Measures
As part of the security plan, pillion riding has also been banned across Punjab during the 10 days. However, exemptions will apply to women, senior citizens, and law enforcement personnel.
The Home Department said restrictions aim to ensure peaceful Muharram observance for Muslims, especially Shia communities.
Authorities instructed district administrations and police to strictly enforce Section 144 across Punjab. Citizens have been urged to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies.
The government ordered increased surveillance and stronger checkpoints during the observance.
Officials said the measures are preventive and aim to protect lives, property, and religious harmony across the province.
Punjab’s administration has reaffirmed its commitment to peace and security during Muharram.
