Pakistan Eyes Sea Route for Pilgrims Traveling to Iraq

The government has taken a fresh step toward improving travel options for pilgrims as it explores a new Pakistan-Iraq ferry service that could connect Karachi with Iraq through sea routes. The move aims to provide a safer and more convenient alternative for thousands of religious travelers who visit holy sites each year.

According to official sources, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed authorities to prepare a detailed feasibility study for launching a ferry service between Karachi and Iraq. The proposal was reviewed during his visit to the Pakistan Coast Guards headquarters in Karachi, where he discussed maritime security and travel facilitation measures.

Officials say the proposed ferry route is still in the early planning stage. However, it may ease air travel pressure during peak pilgrimage seasons like Arbaeen.

The idea behind the Pakistan-Iraq ferry service is to offer an affordable and accessible travel option for pilgrims, particularly those who face difficulties securing air tickets or managing high travel costs. If approved, the ferry service could become a major shift in how Pakistani pilgrims travel to Iraq.

Officials said the study will assess route safety, travel time, port facilities, and international coordination. Authorities will also review security arrangements to ensure safe passenger travel across regional waters.

During the Karachi visit, the interior minister also emphasized stronger maritime security operations and praised the role of the Pakistan Coast Guard in protecting coastal borders and preventing illegal activities such as smuggling and trafficking.

Experts believe the ferry project could boost regional connectivity and open new routes for religious tourism if it succeeds. However, experts say international approvals and infrastructure upgrades will be major challenges before the service starts.
