The Punjab government has approved a major infrastructure project worth Rs 3.08 billion to construct two new GT Road underpasses in Gujar Khan. Officials say the project aims to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance road safety on one of Punjab’s busiest highways.
According to details shared by the Punjab Highway Department, the approved plan includes underpasses at Guliana More and near the Technical Training College. Authorities believe the GT Road underpasses will help streamline heavy traffic movement through the densely populated town area.
GT Road carries a large volume of intercity and commercial traffic daily. Frequent congestion has long been a concern for commuters and residents. Officials say the new underpasses will reduce travel delays and minimize the risk of road accidents caused by traffic bottlenecks.
To make space for the construction work, the local administration has already begun clearing the right-of-way. Several structures, including the Police Khidmat Centre, public toilets, and kiosks, have been demolished in the initial phase.
Officials confirmed that more than 315 additional kiosks and small structures are also planned for removal. These steps are necessary to ensure the smooth execution of the project and uninterrupted construction activity on site.
However, the demolition drive has sparked concern among small traders operating in these kiosks. Many vendors say they depend on these micro-businesses for their daily income and fear losing their livelihoods due to the ongoing clearance operation.
Trader representatives have appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, requesting compensation or alternative land allocation. They are urging the government to rebuild kiosks or provide proper commercial spaces so affected families can keep earning.
Despite these concerns, officials maintain that the project will bring long-term benefits for the region. They say better roads will boost the economy, reduce fuel use, and improve transport efficiency.
