Residents of Karachi’s Media Town have reported a troubling incident involving solar light theft in Karachi, as unidentified thieves stole multiple solar-powered streetlight poles from the area. The theft has raised concerns about security and maintenance of public infrastructure in the journalist housing society near Hawkes Bay.
According to residents, the stolen poles were part of a government-installed lighting project initiated on the instructions of the Sindh chief minister. The solar lights were meant to improve street visibility and safety in the locality, especially during nighttime hours.
Witnesses said the thieves managed to cut and remove at least two complete electric poles fitted with solar panels and lights. Each pole contained dual lighting units designed to provide efficient off-grid illumination.
Residents further shared that this is not an isolated case. Out of nearly 10 installed solar poles in 2023–24, at least three have already been stolen. Despite repeated complaints, no recovery or arrests have been reported so far.
The repeated incidents have created frustration among the local community, especially journalists living in the area. They believe the thefts highlight gaps in law enforcement and security patrols.
Citizens have now urged authorities, including the Sindh Home Department and Karachi police, to take immediate action. They have also called for better monitoring systems and stronger protection for public infrastructure to prevent further losses.
The growing trend of solar light theft Karachi is not only causing financial damage but also undermining public trust in development projects aimed at improving urban infrastructure. Residents fear that if such incidents continue unchecked, more public utilities could be at risk.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the latest theft.
