The Punjab government has announced a major Rs23 billion initiative under the Punjab Katcha development plan, targeting long-neglected riverine areas with improved security, infrastructure, and livelihood support.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said the plan comes after recent security operations restored stability in the region. She noted that the improved law and order situation has created an opportunity for long-term development.
Focus on land, jobs, and basic services
A key part of the plan is land distribution. Authorities will allocate 14,500 acres of state land to local farmers under a government-backed agriculture scheme. The move aims to boost self-reliance and increase farming output in the Katcha belt.
The government will also introduce essential public services in remote areas. These include mobile health clinics, veterinary facilities, and registration services. Officials say these steps will reduce the gap between rural communities and state institutions.
Major funding for security and infrastructure
Out of the total package, a large portion has been set aside for improving law enforcement and infrastructure. The government plans to strengthen policing through modern tools such as drone surveillance, monitoring systems, and armored vehicles.
Road construction is another major focus. Authorities will build and upgrade roads to improve connectivity within the region. Education will also see investment, with schools being upgraded and new institutions planned, including colleges for girls.
Education and youth support
The development plan includes scholarships and free laptops for students from the Katcha areas. Officials say these initiatives will help young people access better education and digital tools.
The government will also offer skill development programs and provide support for women through livestock cards. These steps aim to create employment opportunities and improve household incomes.
Long-term stability and integration
Punjab officials believe the package will help eliminate “no-go areas” and bring the Katcha region into the mainstream. They also plan to maintain strict security measures to prevent criminal groups from returning.
Authorities say the combination of security, infrastructure, and social programs will create lasting change in the region.
