The Power Division has taken new steps to boost electricity generation as Pakistan faces rising demand due to an intense summer heatwave. Officials are working to improve supply and reduce the risk of increased load shedding in the coming weeks.
According to official sources, the Power Division has taken immediate measures to secure additional fuel for power plants. The move comes as electricity demand continues to rise sharply across the country, especially in urban and industrial areas.
Authorities have formally requested the Petroleum Division to arrange 400 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Officials said this supply is essential to keep power plants running at full capacity.
LNG-based plants currently contribute a major share to national electricity production. Without sufficient fuel, experts warn that power shortages could increase significantly during peak summer hours.
LNG Supply Seen as Key Factor
Officials believe that LNG availability will play a central role in stabilizing the power system. These plants have a combined generation capacity of around 6,000 megawatts.
Sources said LNG is a more cost-effective option compared to furnace oil and high-speed diesel. This makes it important for both energy production and the control of electricity costs for consumers.
If LNG supply is not ensured, power plants may shift to expensive fuels. This could increase electricity bills through higher fuel price adjustments, placing additional pressure on households and businesses.
Growing Demand Pushes Urgency
The Power Division has already prepared updated demand and supply estimates for the coming weeks. These projections highlight a potential gap between electricity demand and available supply if action is delayed.
K-Electric has also raised concerns and requested additional LNG to maintain stable power generation in its distribution network.
Officials said coordination between the Power Division and Petroleum Division is ongoing to ensure timely arrangements of LNG cargoes, including possible supplies from Qatar.

The government is aiming to reduce the risk of load shedding during the peak summer months. Rising temperatures have significantly increased electricity usage, especially for cooling systems.
