Export Crisis Looms as New Fees Threaten Pakistan’s Meat Trade

Export Crisis Looms as New Fees Threaten Pakistan’s Meat Trade, and industry experts warn that this could reduce Pakistan’s meat exports significantly. The new charges, introduced by Gerry’s Dnata, add Rs. 50 per kilogram, translating to roughly $180 per ton. Exporters fear these fees will raise export logistics costs and disrupt the export supply chain, affecting international meat markets.

The All Pakistan Meat Exporters & Processors Association (APMEPA) has urged the government to intervene. They called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Ministry of Commerce to act quickly. According to APMEPA, unauthorized fees undermine exporters’ competitiveness, leading to increased shipment disruptions and export price increases. The association noted that predictable logistics costs are essential to maintain export market stability and retain international buyers.

Pakistan’s meat export industry is already operating in a highly competitive environment. Small increases in handling fees can push buyers toward countries with lower costs. Experts warn that such controversial charges could damage Pakistan’s value-added export sector and reduce export revenue. Agricultural exports, particularly meat, contribute significantly to the country’s external accounts support, and any disruption could have wider economic effects.

Exporters argue that shipping and handling fees have traditionally been covered by airlines, and that operational disputes should not burden exporters. Without intervention, the new fees may reduce export competitiveness, limiting Pakistan’s presence in the global meat market and international trade. Many exporters fear that this sudden cost hike may create long-term challenges for the sector.

Government action could reverse the negative impact and restore confidence in the Pakistan meat exports supply chain. Prompt resolution will ensure exporters remain competitive, stabilize prices, and continue to grow in global markets.
