Punjab Police Launch Massive Crackdown on Illegal Kite Flying

Punjab Police Launch Massive Crackdown on Illegal Kite Flying as Basant 2026 celebrations returned to Lahore after a 25-year break. The police intensified actions against kite flying violations under the Kite Flying Act. Authorities seized illegal kites and metallic strings to ensure public safety during the three-day Basant festival.

Over the past 24 hours, Punjab police registered 193 cases across the province and arrested 191 individuals. Officers recovered 22,755 illegal kites and 462 reels of metallic and chemical-coated string. So far this year, 4,486 people involved in kite manufacturing, sale, and flying of banned kites have been apprehended. Police have also seized over 371,000 kites and 8,648 string reels during operations.

Inspector General of Punjab Police ordered the strict enforcement of SOPs and safety regulations. He instructed officers to monitor rooftops and streets to prevent unsafe kite flying. The three-day Basant festival in Lahore is allowed only on designated days and under government-approved conditions. Punjab’s Information Minister, Azma Bukhari, inaugurated the festival with a midnight kite launch. Cultural festivities, traditional Basant activities, and rooftop kite flying added vibrancy, while women participated with colorful outfits and henna-adorned hands.

Authorities emphasize that following public safety measures is crucial. Illegal kites and metallic strings pose risks of injuries and accidents. Police urged citizens to report violations and cooperate to maintain a safe celebration. Enforcement combines arrests, seizure of dangerous substances, and awareness campaigns to protect the public.

Basant 2026 is returning with excitement and color, but the Punjab Police crackdown ensures safety for all. Following the Kite Flying Act and SOPs allows families to enjoy the festival without harm.
