Punjab Government Completes Restoration of Multan Clock Tower, marking a major milestone in preserving South Punjab’s historic landmarks. The clock tower, a significant Multan heritage site, has reopened after restoration and beautification. This project aimed to restore the landmark to its original condition while enhancing its visual appeal for locals and tourists.
The restoration project took one year to complete and cost $200,000. It involved technical assistance from the private organization THAAP and support from the US government through its Cultural Heritage Preservation Program. Officials like South Punjab Additional Chief Secretary Fawad Hashim Rabbani, US Consul General Stetson Sanders, Public Diplomacy Officer Raquel King Nicudemus, and Multan Commissioner Amir Kareem Khan inaugurated the restored clock tower. Their collaboration highlighted the importance of preserving historical landmarks across Pakistan.
During the project, 150 craftsmen received apprenticeship training, combining skill development with heritage preservation. The initiative also focused on careful restoration to original architectural details, ensuring the Multan Clock Tower remains a timeless landmark. Beautification efforts included repairing damaged structures and enhancing surrounding areas, improving the visitor experience, and boosting local tourism.
Experts noted that similar preservation initiatives could be replicated for other historic sites in Pakistan. The successful collaboration between the Punjab government, THAAP, and US cultural programs demonstrates how government and private partnerships can safeguard heritage while providing economic and educational benefits.
The completion of the Multan Clock Tower restoration reinforces the city’s cultural identity and offers an inspiring example of effective historical landmark preservation. Visitors can now enjoy a fully restored, visually striking clock tower that reflects South Punjab’s rich history.
