Punjab Wildlife Department Launches First-Ever Auction for Partridge Hunting Permits

For the first time in Punjab, the Punjab Wildlife Department launches the first-ever auction for partridge hunting permits, marking a milestone in regulated hunting. This initiative introduces competitive hunting auctions in the Salt Range, promoting community-based wildlife management and sustainable hunting practices.

The new system covers key areas in Chakwal, Jhelum, and neighboring districts, designated as Community-Based Conservancies. Hunters can now obtain permits exclusively through formal auctions, ensuring transparency and local participation. Deputy Chief Wildlife Ranger Zahid Ali highlighted that previous conservancies, inspired by the Punjab urial management model, successfully balanced hunting with wildlife conservation.

On the auction’s first day, permits for 87 zones were sold, generating Rs. 3.0827 million. The highest bid reached Rs. 300,000, while several exceeded Rs. 100,000, showing strong community and hunter engagement. Each zone issues an average of nine permits, allowing hunters up to three rifles and a maximum of six partridges per permit. Hunters can hunt only on Sundays, and they must use their permits for a single visit within the assigned zones.

Zones are opened after a thorough bird population assessment, and village leaders participate in planning to ensure illegal hunting prevention. Under the new policy, 80% of auction revenue supports breeding habitats improvement and local community development. This approach not only strengthens game management in the Salt Range but also encourages sustainable hunting practices aligned with wildlife conservation goals.

The initiative demonstrates a landmark shift toward regulated hunting in Punjab, linking financial incentives to local community participation. Hunters and conservationists alike see this model as a blueprint for future hunting regulations and fees.
