Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has cancelled his planned visit to Switzerland following a major diplomatic development involving a reported peace agreement between the United States and Iran. The decision comes amid updates that the agreement has already been electronically signed, making the trip unnecessary. The situation has brought renewed attention to the PM Shehbaz Switzerland Visit and Pakistan’s role in regional diplomacy.
According to official sources, the prime minister was scheduled to travel to Switzerland to attend a peace agreement ceremony between the two long-time adversaries. However, the visit was called off after confirmation that all parties and mediators had already signed the Islamabad Agreement electronically.
Officials said the cancellation was based on the completion of formalities before the scheduled ceremony. No further logistical purpose remained for the Swiss event once the agreement was finalized.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the signing of a historic US–Iran memorandum of understanding. In a statement on X, he praised both countries’ leadership for choosing diplomacy over confrontation.
He specifically highlighted the role of US President Donald Trump and members of his negotiating team, including J.D. Vance, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner. The prime minister credited their efforts for helping prevent what he described as a potentially serious regional conflict.
Shehbaz Sharif also expressed appreciation for Iran’s leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. He noted their willingness to engage in constructive dialogue during the negotiation process.
According to the statement, multiple regional actors, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Egypt, support the agreement. They played an instrumental role in facilitating the breakthrough.
The Prime Minister’s Office has not confirmed it, but sources say the finalized agreement status matches the cancellation. The development has drawn attention across diplomatic circles, highlighting Pakistan’s indirect involvement in facilitating peace efforts.
