Petrol Pump Owners Seek Monthly Fuel Price Review System

Petrol pump owners across Pakistan have urged the government to shift from weekly adjustments to a fuel price review system on a monthly basis, saying frequent changes are creating operational pressure and uncertainty in the retail fuel sector.

The demand comes amid ongoing volatility in petroleum pricing, which dealers say is making it difficult to manage stock, pricing, and customer expectations. According to representatives of the petrol pump owners’ association, a monthly fuel price review would help stabilize the market and allow better financial planning for fuel retailers.

Dealers Call Weekly Changes “Unstable”

Fuel retailers argue that the current weekly pricing mechanism often forces them to adjust operations too frequently. They say this leads to administrative confusion and affects profit margins, especially for small and mid-level pump operators.

Association members stated that price fluctuations within short intervals create uncertainty for both dealers and consumers. They believe a more structured monthly system would reduce pressure on the supply chain and improve operational efficiency.

They also pointed out that frequent revisions increase the risk of pricing errors and logistical challenges, particularly in remote areas where fuel distribution already faces delays.

Demand for a Predictable Pricing Mechanism

Petrol pump owners have stressed that a predictable fuel price review system would not only benefit retailers but also improve market stability. They argue that when prices change too often, it becomes harder for businesses to plan inventory and manage cash flow.

The association added that a monthly review cycle could help create a more balanced environment for both consumers and dealers. They believe it would reduce confusion at the retail level and improve trust in the pricing system.

Warning of Possible Protest Campaign

In their statement, the association warned that if authorities do not address their concerns, they may launch a nationwide protest campaign. They said the responsibility for any escalation would lie with the relevant government bodies if the issue remains unresolved.

Fuel pump owners also highlighted that ongoing uncertainty in petroleum pricing is already affecting consumer sentiment. Many customers, they said, react strongly to sudden price changes, which often puts additional pressure on retail outlets.

Government Response Awaited

So far, the government has not issued an official response to the latest demand. However, petroleum pricing remains a sensitive issue in Pakistan, where global oil market fluctuations and currency movements regularly impact domestic fuel rates.

Analysts say any shift from weekly to monthly pricing would require careful evaluation. They note that while stability is important for retailers, the government also needs flexibility to respond to international oil price changes.

For now, the discussion continues as stakeholders weigh the balance between market stability and responsive pricing.
