Microsoft Office to Restrict Editing on Apple Devices Soon

Microsoft is set to introduce a major change that could affect millions of Apple users worldwide, including those in Pakistan. The company will roll out a licensing update that may lead to an Office Apple editing restriction on older versions of its productivity apps.

From July 13, 2026, Microsoft Office apps on Apple devices may enter limited functionality mode if not updated. This means users can view files, but editing, saving, and creating new documents may not work on older versions.

The issue is linked to an expiring digital certificate that validates Office apps on macOS, iPadOS, and iOS. Once this certificate expires, older installations may lose key editing features unless updated.

Microsoft has confirmed that users of Microsoft 365 and Office 2021 will receive updates to fix the issue. These users will only need to update their device and Office apps to restore full functionality.

However, users still relying on Office 2019 will likely face the biggest impact. Since support for Office 2019 officially ended in October 2023, Microsoft will not release new updates for it. As a result, these users may permanently lose editing access after the change takes effect.

According to Microsoft’s support guidance, affected apps may switch to a “reduced functionality mode.” In this state, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote will still open documents but block editing and saving features.

This update will affect Apple devices, including MacBooks, iPads, and iPhones. Users working in offices, schools, and freelance environments may experience disruptions if they delay updating their software.

Experts suggest that users should upgrade to supported versions as soon as possible to avoid workflow interruptions. In Pakistan, the update may affect small businesses and students using older Office versions on Apple devices.

Microsoft has not indicated any plans to extend support for older versions. This means upgrading remains the only long-term solution for uninterrupted access to Office apps on Apple devices.

As the deadline nears, users should update their Office and install all updates before July 13, 2026.
