Karachi Zoo Reopens with Renovated Facilities, Mayor Inaugurates Upgrades, bringing modern infrastructure and improved visitor amenities to the city’s iconic Gandhi Garden zoo. Mayor Murtaza Wahab highlighted that the Karachi Zoo renovation focuses on enhancing zoo visitor facilities and animal care and welfare, providing a safer and more enjoyable environment for both animals and visitors.
The upgrades include a modern animal enclosure spanning two acres, housing lions Chandni and Rani behind bulletproof glass. The enclosure also features water play areas and resting spaces for the animals. The Reptile House has reopened following renovations, and a new visitor tower with walkways and seating areas has been added. Informational signboards are installed throughout the zoo, improving educational experiences for guests.
Mayor Wahab also emphasized that veterinary doctor engagement has increased to ensure proper animal health and welfare. Elephants born at the zoo demonstrate the success of ongoing elephant care and breeding programs. These efforts reflect a milestone in public asset maintenance and animal enclosure modernization.
The Karachi Zoo upgrades aim to cater to thousands of daily zoo visitors, particularly low- and middle-income families. Entry fees remain affordable at Rs30 for children and Rs50 for adults, with zoo revenue allocated to ongoing improvements. The administration clarified that no new large animals will be acquired, focusing instead on the welfare of existing wildlife.
These renovations mark a significant improvement in zoo infrastructure and visitor experience enhancement. The Karachi Zoo now stands as a model for public-sector recreational projects and sustainable animal care in Pakistan.
