Rare Fetus in Fetu Removed from Chest of Young Child in Pakistan

Rare ‘Fetus in Fetu’ Removed from Chest of Young Child in Pakistan after a successful pediatric thoracic surgery at Sheikh Zayed Medical College and Hospital. The child, Rehan, suffered from persistent cough and breathing difficulties, which led doctors to perform advanced scans. These revealed an underdeveloped fetus inside his chest, located dangerously close to the heart and major blood vessels. The rare congenital condition, known as fetus in fetu, affects about one in 500,000 births worldwide, making this case exceptionally rare.

Senior thoracic surgeon, Dr Sultan Mahmood, led the complex surgery to remove the fetus. The procedure required extreme precision because even a minor error could have been fatal. Dr Sultan explained that fetus in fetu occurs when one twin remains underdeveloped inside the body of the other. Most cases appear in the abdomen, but the presence in the chest is extremely rare.

Rehan’s family had consulted multiple doctors before the correct diagnosis. Thanks to the expertise of the medical team and advanced hospital care, the child is recovering well in the thoracic ward under careful observation. Hospital spokesperson, Dr Ilyas Rana, called the surgical removal of the fetus a major achievement in pediatric surgery.

Early detection is vital in such rare pediatric cases. Symptoms like persistent cough, breathing difficulties, or unusual chest abnormalities should never be ignored. Timely diagnosis allows doctors to plan complex surgeries safely and ensures better post-surgery recovery.

This remarkable case highlights the importance of specialized pediatric thoracic surgery and advanced child health care. Rare congenital anomalies like this remind the world how precision and expertise save lives.
