Pakistan Business Forum demands milk price regulation as retail milk cost continues to rise sharply across the country. Ahmed Jawad, PBF chief organizer, said dairy products are essential commodities, but their prices are beyond public reach. Even after removing GST on dairy products, milk prices remain high at Rs 305–315 per litre. The forum emphasized the need for government intervention to protect consumers.
Rising milk prices in Pakistan have sparked concerns among households and small businesses. The PBF highlighted that purchase costs, including the logistics costs of milk, are around Rs 180 per litre. Yet, dairy companies are selling milk for Rs 360–380 per litre. In comparison, Tetra Pak milk in India and Bangladesh costs Rs 250–270 per litre. This milk price comparison shows a clear price hike in Pakistan.
The forum demanded strict dairy companies and government price control to ensure milk affordability. With the dairy sector earning between Rs 60–100 billion, profit margins remain high while consumers struggle. Restricting GST on dairy products to seven percent and monitoring retail milk cost could bring immediate relief. Public access to milk should not be limited due to inflation or unchecked price increases.
Experts warn that dairy product inflation may continue unless the government enforces timely interventions. Effective milk price regulation can stabilize the market, help households, and maintain fair competition among dairy companies. The forum urged authorities to act immediately to bring down milk prices and ensure essential commodities remain accessible to all.
