OGDC Announces Major Oil and Gas Discovery in Kohat, marking an important step for Pakistan’s energy sector. The latest Pakistan hydrocarbon discovery also highlights the growing potential of Kohat oil and gas reserves. Officials confirmed that the new reserves could support indigenous oil production in Pakistan and reduce reliance on imports. The development strengthens confidence in upstream exploration in Pakistan because new resources are critical for future demand.
According to Oil and Gas Development Company Limited, the discovery came from the Baragzai X-01 well under the Nashpa Exploration Licence. The site is located in the Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Engineers conducted a cased hole drill stem test, which confirmed strong hydrocarbon potential. The well produced about 225 barrels of oil per day and 1.01 million cubic feet of gas daily. Experts say these results show commercial viability because the formation testing results were consistent.
The Lumshiwal Formation discovery further confirmed hydrocarbon prospectivity in the region. Earlier tests in the Kingriali and Hangu formations also showed positive results, so confidence increased. The exploratory well reached a total depth of 5,170 metres, demonstrating successful drilling performance. Wireline log evaluation also supported the hydrocarbon potential assessment.
OGDC operates the block with a 65 percent working interest partnership alongside Pakistan Petroleum Limited and Government Holdings (Private) Limited. This joint venture energy project strengthens Pakistan’s petroleum sector development because collaboration improves efficiency. Analysts believe domestic gas production will help reduce the energy supply demand gap Pakistan faces.
Energy experts note Pakistan imports billions of dollars worth of fuel annually. Therefore, local discoveries support Pakistan’s energy security improvement and economic stability. Indigenous resource development also supports long-term energy sector growth in Pakistan.
