May 9 Cases: Yasmin Rashid Appeals Against 10-Year Sentences after the Lahore Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) handed down jail terms in the GOR attack case. Yasmin Rashid, a senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader, filed appeals in the Lahore High Court seeking the overturn of the sentences and suspension pending court decision. The appeals argue that the trial court did not properly evaluate the facts of the May 9 incidents.
Yasmin Rashid and three PTI leaders were sentenced on December 19, 2025. The court sentenced each to 10 years for assaulting officials, vandalism, and mob violence. The attack included damage to police vehicles, burning property, and a container attack at the GOR-1 gate in Club Chowk. The court acquitted Shah Mahmood Qureshi in five of his 14 cases.
The FIR registered by the Race Course Police Station detailed the attack and confirmed statements from 56 prosecution witnesses. PTI leader Hammad Azhar faced accusations of inciting workers. Additionally, Lahore courts can pause sentences during appeal reviews. Lawyers said the trial court ignored key evidence and misjudged facts, the main point of Yasmin Rashid’s appeal.
Political observers say these appeals could influence public perception ahead of upcoming elections. Moreover, the cases highlight wider issues, including riots in Pakistan, property damage, and police accountability. Meanwhile, the Lahore High Court will soon hear the appeals, potentially setting a precedent for political jail terms.
