LHC Considers Legal Challenge to Basant Festival Permission

Lahore High Court Considers Legal Challenge to Basant Festival Permission, as a petition has been filed questioning the conditional approval granted for the festival. The legal challenge focuses on public safety concerns due to kite flying accidents and previous injuries. The Lahore High Court (LHC) will review whether the Deputy Commissioner Lahore acted within safety guidelines while granting the Basant 2026 notification.

Lawyer Azhar Siddique filed the petition, highlighting that kite flying has previously caused serious injuries. Just two days ago, a kite string critically injured a two-year-old girl by cutting her throat. The petition requests the LHC to declare the Basant permission null and void because of the high risks to human life and public safety.

The Deputy Commissioner Lahore issued a conditional Basant approval, allowing kite flying only on 6–8 February 2026. Authorities have restricted the sale of kite flying materials to 1–8 February 2026. Authorities have imposed a strict zero-tolerance policy against prohibited kite strings. Also, they will permit only paper-based kite strings, while they will continue to ban nylon, plastic, and metal strings. Police and district administration enforcement will monitor compliance closely to ensure safety.

Officials emphasized that the protection of human life remains the top priority. Parents must ensure their children avoid using banned kite strings. The administration has also banned aerial firing, alcohol consumption, and disorderly conduct during Basant celebrations. These kite flying safety regulations aim to prevent accidents and maintain law and order.

As the LHC considers the legal petition against Basant, the city awaits its verdict, which will determine whether the festival can proceed under strict safety guidelines. Authorities remain committed to human life protection and public safety Basant measures.
