Karachi to Phase Out Tanker and Hydrant Water Supply: Mayor signals a major policy shift. It highlights efforts to fix chronic shortages. Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced the decision during a meeting with Karachi Water Corporation officials. He said tanker systems failed residents, so pipeline-based water distribution is now the focus.
The Karachi Mayor confirmed that the hydrant water system will be phased out gradually. All expired hydrant contracts will remain canceled, and no new agreements will be issued. Officials revealed that hydrants generated nearly Rs30 crore monthly in revenue. However, the misuse of tanker water encouraged corruption in the water supply across the city.
The tanker water supply ban aims to weaken the tanker mafia Karachi residents often criticize. Authorities believe pipelines will ensure transparent water distribution. Under the plan, water will reach homes directly through proper lines. This system supports fair access and improves water management in Karachi.
To manage water shortages in Karachi, officials introduced an alternate-day water supply plan. This approach spreads water more evenly among neighborhoods. Experts say scheduled delivery can stabilize the urban water supply that Pakistan struggles to maintain. Better planning may also reduce Karachi residents’ water issues over time.
Temporary disruptions will still occur due to maintenance work. The old Pipri Pumping Station shutdown recently affected multiple areas. The Malir water disruption caused inconvenience for many households. Shah Faisal Colony water supply also dropped during the maintenance period. Model Town Karachi’s water shortage added pressure to daily routines.
Meanwhile, the new Pipri Pumping Station remained operational. Landhi hydrant closure and Sherpao hydrant closure supported safety measures. Officials issued a water storage advisory for residents during disruptions.
Karachi water reforms aim to improve accountability and efficiency. The mayor believes these steps will strengthen the water distribution system. Long-term reforms could finally ease the water crisis in Karachi.
