KAMAL Launches 1 MW Solar System for Vaccine Warehouse, marking a major step in modernizing Pakistan’s healthcare infrastructure. The Federal Minister for Health, Syed Mustafa Kamal, inaugurated the 1 MW solar power system at the EPI Warehouse in collaboration with UNICEF. This initiative aims to strengthen Pakistan’s cold chain system and ensure uninterrupted vaccine storage.
The solarization of the vaccine warehouse introduces sustainable energy for healthcare. The 1 MW solar system will protect vaccines during power outages and reduce reliance on conventional electricity. Dr. Musa Khan, DG FDI, highlighted that cold chain maintenance is essential for safeguarding millions of children nationwide. By integrating solar power solutions for immunization warehouses, the government ensures vaccines remain potent and effective.
This project exemplifies effective collaboration between the government and development partners. Gavi and UNICEF supported the initiative, demonstrating how public health system reform can benefit from international assistance. Currently, Pakistan vaccinates against 13 preventable diseases, and the HPV vaccine is now included in the national immunization schedule. Strengthening Pakistan’s cold chain system supports preventive healthcare measures and enhances vaccination coverage for future generations.
Mustafa Kamal emphasized that transforming sick care into true healthcare requires both infrastructure development and renewable energy adoption. With this solar project, Pakistan can reduce vaccine financing burdens, projected to rise from USD 400 million to USD 1.2 billion by 2030. Facilities in Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad will benefit from similar initiatives, aligning with the Health Card initiative and Universal Health Insurance scheme.
The 1 MW solar power system at the EPI Warehouse demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable, modern healthcare. By integrating renewable energy and cold chain maintenance, the government ensures life-saving vaccines remain safe for all citizens.
