Don’t Close Your Eyes to History, Naveed Qamar Urges Govt

Don’t Close Your Eyes to History, Naveed Qamar Urges Government to Acknowledge Past Lessons, highlighting the importance of learning from previous governance failures. Naveed Qamar, a senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) parliamentarian, emphasized that ignoring historical accountability in Pakistan can weaken federalism and public trust. He called on the government to address past mistakes, particularly in resource allocation and law and order management.

During a National Assembly debate on the Karachi fire tragedy, Naveed Qamar criticized Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s statements, warning that federal and provincial policies must respect historical lessons. He pointed out that deductions of health and education sector funding and neglect of urban governance issues, such as the Gul Plaza fire in Karachi, undermine public safety policies. The PPP leader urged the government not to “play with fire” and to strengthen federating units for better provincial autonomy.

Naveed Qamar also highlighted the need for transferring power from provincial capitals to districts and tehsils. This step, he argued, would improve local disaster management and ensure timely responses to emergencies. By empowering local governments, Pakistan can address law and order issues more effectively and build civic trust. He emphasized that incorporating the public perspective in policymaking is crucial for long-term governance reforms in Pakistan.

The parliamentarian’s call serves as a reminder that historical accountability in Pakistan is essential for sustainable development. Learning from events like the Gul Plaza fire in Karachi and other governance failures ensures better planning for public safety, urban management, and equitable resource distribution. Naveed Qamar’s warnings underscore the necessity of balancing provincial and federal powers while respecting past lessons to protect citizens and strengthen institutions.
